Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader not working

I purchased a Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader to transfer photos and videos from my camera to my iPhone 6. When I plug the adapter in with the SD Card in, the import tab appears but says there are no photos to import. How do I fix this?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.2

people report the photos has to be placed in a dir called DCIM

Is there any way to do that through the camera or without putting the SD card into a computer?
